A Republican lawmaker has sparked debate with a bold and controversial proposal a $250 bill featuring former President Donald Trump.

South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson recently shared an image of what the bill would look like, depicting Trump’s portrait in full color on a traditional green U.S. currency design.

Wilson took to social media to announce that he is actively drafting legislation to push this bill forward, igniting immediate reactions from the public.

“Grateful to announce that I am drafting legislation to direct the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to design a $250 bill featuring Donald J. Trump,” Wilson stated on X (formerly Twitter).

Wilson justified his move as a response to economic difficulties under the current administration, claiming, “Bidenflation has destroyed the economy, forcing American families to carry more cash. Most valuable bill for most valuable President!”

The reaction on social media, however, was swift and overwhelmingly critical, with many questioning whether this should be a legislative priority amid pressing national issues.

One user responded, “Really? I voted for Trump, but isn’t there more pressing issues at hand?”

Another commenter referenced Elon Musk’s directive for federal employees to list their weekly accomplishments, sarcastically writing, “Did you fill out the 5 things you did last week? If this is on your agenda, it would seem you are expendable.”

Skepticism over the bill’s practicality also emerged, with a user quipping, “Starting to think this is a parody account. You think we carry $250 around? You are out of touch, Joe.”

Others mocked the proposal’s timing, with one widely shared comment reading, “Great idea! Now we have a large enough bill to pay for a single carton of eggs.”

Despite the backlash, Wilson doubled down on his position, later sharing an official draft of the bill and thanking Republican Representatives Diana Harshbarger, Ralph Norman, and Darrell Issa for co-sponsoring the initiative.

In his follow-up post, Wilson described the bill as a tribute to “the 250th birthday of America and our most valuable President Donald J. Trump!”

Financial experts and political analysts, however, were quick to point out that the U.S. Treasury has no plans to introduce new denominations anytime soon, making the bill unlikely to become a reality.

The proposal has nonetheless fueled intense debate, with critics calling it a distraction from more urgent national concerns, while some Trump supporters applauded the initiative.

The bigger question remains will Wilson’s bill gain any serious traction in Congress, or is it destined to be just another symbolic gesture in the ongoing political discourse?

As public discussions around the bill continue, Wilson appears determined to push forward despite mounting skepticism.

For now, the bill remains in its early stages, with no clear path to becoming law, but its introduction has undoubtedly sparked a heated conversation on Trump’s legacy and his place in American history.
