In 2021, Lovato took a significant step by publicly coming out as non-binary, adopting they/them pronouns in alignment with her self-reflective journey and newfound understanding of her identity.

Lovato described the shift as a result of โ€œa lot of healing and self-reflective work,โ€ revealing that adopting they/them felt โ€œmost authentic and trueโ€ to her sense of fluid gender identity.

โ€œIโ€™m a very free-spirited, open person,โ€ she explained in an early interview, discussing how conventional gender roles felt restrictive, particularly for someone raised with conservative norms in Dallas, Texas.

Yet, while this was a groundbreaking revelation for her, Lovato soon found that publicly living her identity was a different challenge altogether.

In a recent interview with “GQ Hype Spain,” Lovato shared that the need to constantly educate others on her identity and pronoun choice became increasingly taxing.

โ€œI constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns,โ€ she shared, describing the process as โ€œabsolutely exhaustingโ€ over time.

This emotional toll led her to feel more comfortable using feminine pronouns again, even as she maintained her core understanding of herself as a fluid individual.

โ€œI was simply tired,โ€ Lovato admitted, acknowledging that while she felt worn out, she also understood the importance of spreading awareness around gender inclusivity and fluidity.

Her journey reflects a delicate balance between personal authenticity and navigating the demands of public life, something she has shared with transparency.

Lovatoโ€™s decision also ties into her ongoing exploration of gender expression, which she described as inherently fluid and adaptable over time.

In 2022, she shared on the Spout Podcast that she began using she/her pronouns again as her energy felt more balanced between masculinity and femininity.

โ€œWhen I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom, and it said โ€˜womenโ€™ and โ€˜men,โ€™ I didnโ€™t feel necessarily like a woman. I didnโ€™t feel like a man. I just felt like a human,โ€ she explained.

For Lovato, this fluidity defines her journey, even if it doesnโ€™t align neatly with societal expectations around gender.

Lovato also shed light on the unique challenges non-binary individuals face, from limited gender-neutral bathroom access to government forms that only offer binary options.

She shared that while she often feels compelled to use womenโ€™s bathrooms, a gender-neutral option would make her feel more comfortable and aligned with her sense of self.

โ€œI see myself conditioned to choose a woman because there are no more [options],โ€ she told “GQ,” expressing her hope for a future that offers more inclusivity.

Reflecting on her experiences with the media, Lovato expressed relief in stepping back from the demands to explain her identity repeatedly.

“These are my pronouns and this is who I am,โ€ she shared in a previous interview, emphasizing her exhaustion from overexposure and feeling that she no longer has to provide endless explanations.

She has set boundaries, declaring that she is โ€œdone spoon-feedingโ€ her identity to meet public expectations and feels empowered in deciding which parts of her life to keep private.

Only recently did Lovato reveal that she has re-adopted she/her pronouns alongside they/them, sharing that her ongoing journey with identity has led her to a place of greater self-acceptance.

As she explained, โ€œNobodyโ€™s perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point โ€ฆ itโ€™s all about respect.โ€

In this reflection, Lovato has crafted a message that resonates deeply, highlighting the importance of empathy and respect for everyoneโ€™s unique journey with identity.
