Bryar’s passion for music began in his hometown of Chicago, where he was born in 1979. Early exposure to drums sparked a lifelong fascination.
This passion led him to pursue formal education in sound engineering at the University of Florida. His technical knowledge and natural rhythm allowed him to explore the industry in unique ways.
Before stepping into the spotlight as a drummer, Bryar worked as a touring sound engineer. He contributed to the success of bands like Thrice and The Used.
It was during a tour with The Used in 2004 that Bryar crossed paths with My Chemical Romance (MCR). The band had just released Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and was on the rise.
When MCR’s drummer Matt Pelissier left the band, Bryar stepped in to fill the gap. He described joining the band as stepping into a world of chaos but with immense potential.
“Long before we recorded Welcome to the Black Parade, I knew they were special and I wanted in,” he later reflected. His dedication and belief in the band were evident.
During his six years with MCR, the band released their iconic album The Black Parade in 2006. The album became a cultural phenomenon, defining a generation of rock fans.
Bryar’s contributions extended beyond his drumming. He influenced creative decisions, including vocal arrangements, which made it onto the final record.
Despite the camaraderie and musical success, Bryar left the band in 2010. His departure came during the production of Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.

After leaving MCR, Bryar’s life took him down various paths. He continued working in music behind the scenes before retiring from the industry entirely in 2014.
He shifted his focus to real estate and dog rescue initiatives, demonstrating his compassion. Bryar auctioned off memorabilia to support animal shelters and hurricane-affected areas.
His retirement from drumming in 2021 was another pivotal moment. “I’m too old, too fat, and it’s time for something new,” he wrote humorously on Twitter.
While My Chemical Romance reunited in 2019 and began releasing new music, Bryar was not part of the revival. However, his legacy with the band remained strong.
