In the heart of Buenos Aires, a chance encounter generated an amazing memory for a group of fans. Among them was Noelia, a diehard Liam Payne fan who had no idea the small moment would be so significant.
What appeared to be an average day in the Argentine capital became exceptional when Noelia met the former One Direction member. She recalls that social media had alerted her to Payne’s presence in the city.
“I ran into him by chance. I had found out on Twitter that he was here for Niall’s show,” Noelia discussed with “PEOPLE.” What ensued was a simple yet meaningful contact that Noelia and her fellow followers love.
“We took photos together. I waited for him to approach us, and we took pictures with all the fans,” she stated, highlighting how friendly Payne was during the interaction. Noelia described the singer’s personality as pleasant, calm, and even amusing.
“He talked to us, hugged us, and even made jokes,” she said, recalling Payne’s easygoing personality. As more admirers gathered outside his hotel, Payne proceeded to interact with them in an engaging manner that created a lasting impact.
Despite the swelling audience, Noelia observed that “there was nothing strange or unusual regarding his behavior.” Payne’s relaxed attitude with his followers was a recurring theme, but this time it would be remembered for different reasons.
The hotel eventually requested Payne to leave since the rising number of supporters gathered at the gate was interfering with other guests’ experiences. Payne, who was in Buenos Aires to support his former bandmate Niall Horan’s concert at the Movistar Arena on October 2, left an indelible impression on those who spoke with him.
During the show, Payne appeared to be in excellent spirits. Noelia described how everyone’s attention was drawn to the singer when he played a One Direction hit. “When Niall started singing one of the One Direction songs, everyone was looking at Liam. He seemed to be enjoying himself,” she shared.
Payne’s enthusiasm was also shown on his social media. In Instagram footage, he was seen enjoying the event with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. Payne later voiced his excitement in a Snapchat video, writing, “So happy [I] got to see Niall in concert.”
But only 14 days after this wonderful occasion, a catastrophe occurred that shocked the world. On October 16, Liam Payne fell from the third-floor balcony of his Buenos Aires hotel.
The fall occurred at the Casa Sur hotel in the popular Palermo neighborhood, and officials were notified right away. Payne’s injuries, according to Alberto Crescenti, chief of the state emergency medical system, were serious and “incompatible with life.”
According to reports, the event occurred at 5 p.m. local time, and despite the prompt arrival of emergency services, the singer could not be rescued. Payne, famed for his global success with One Direction, died on the scene.
