John Cena may be known for his tough guy WWE persona and blockbuster roles, but even he couldn’t mask the sheer awkwardness of one particularly intimate on screen moment.
Back in 2015, Cena appeared in Judd Apatow’s hit romantic comedy Trainwreck, playing Steven, a muscular, gym obsessed fling of Amy Schumer’s character.
While the film delivered laughs and memorable moments, it’s one scene in particular that has refused to fade into the background: the hilariously uncomfortable s3x scene between Cena and Schumer.
But nearly a decade later, Cena is revisiting the cringe worthy experience, and it turns out it was far from romantic.
Speaking on the Club Shay Shay podcast, Cena recalled how the supposedly s3xy moment was anything but.

“Oh my God, it’s the worst,” he confessed. “There’s a whole f*ing world back here. There’s so many people you need to make a movie. There is nothing intimate about it. Nothing.”**
Originally, Cena had prepared lines for the scene, including some laugh out loud awkward attempts at dirty talk like “I’ll fill you with protein” and “I’ll put my green drink in you.” But those lines were scrapped.
Instead, he was told:
“We want you to do elaborate and crazy stunt s3x.”
Despite the comedic tone of the movie, Cena admitted that filming the scene was genuinely “embarrassing,” especially with a large crew and even a catering table nearby during the shoot. He added that the team specifically told him:
“Try to have the most awkward s3x you possibly can.”
And awkward it was, both by design and in reality.

The scene became infamous not only for its exaggerated ridiculousness but also for Amy Schumer’s bold commentary on it.
At the time, Schumer had jokingly claimed Cena was “actually inside her” during the scene, which only added fuel to the fire, especially as Cena was dating WWE star Nikki Bella at the time.
Later, in a playful jab, Schumer responded to Cena’s recent interview with a video on her Instagram Stories, saying:
“John, how dare you. That s3x scene meant a lot to me and I was, like, very into it. And I’m in love with you.”
Cena, on the other hand, was quick to clarify on The Howard Stern Show that no actual !ntimacy occurred. In fact, he revealed he wore a “Spandex sock” also known as a modesty pouch during filming.
Still, he credited Schumer and Apatow for making him feel “completely comfortable” throughout the process.
Interestingly, Cena also revealed that the entire scene was inspired by Schumer’s real life experience with a partner who was “too athletic for her.”
That detail helped fuel the over the top comedic energy that made the scene so unforgettable.
For Cena, who once thought he’d never become an actor, it was a turning point. He realized that his WWE days were limited, and roles like this one offered a creative freedom his wrestling persona couldn’t.

“Someone gives you the opportunity to be this weird, awkward naked guy,” he said, “and you just grab it with both hands.”
What was meant to be a fleeting comedy moment in Trainwreck has now become a standout story and a reminder that even the strongest man in the ring can find himself in the most hilariously vulnerable situations.
And for Amy Schumer?
Let’s just say… she’s still into it.
