A woman’s first-time beauty appointment has sparked outrage across the internet after a post-waxing message from her beautician crossed a line that many believe should never have been touched.
Sarah Button, 27, an Australian TikToker with over 244,000 followers, had booked a Brazilian wax for the first time. It was a typical visit until she received a text message after leaving the salon that left her stunned, embarrassed, and eventually, furious.
She shared her story on TikTok, revealing how what was meant to be a standard beauty experience turned into a moment of personal shame.
At first, Sarah said everything seemed normal during the session. But the awkwardness set in later, when her phone buzzed with a follow-up message from the beautician.
“Thanks hun. Just in future I’ll have to charge you a little more just for the size of the area. I hope that makes sense! Nothing crazy like $5-10 extra. Enjoy Melbourne!” the text read.
Caught off guard, Sarah politely replied with “no worries” but inside, she said she felt anything but fine.
“It made me feel initially a bit sad and confused and ashamed,” she told news.com.au. “But that quickly turned to anger and I was just pissed off about the whole thing.”
She said what made it worse was that there had been no mention of any size-related pricing during the consultation or appointment.
“It wasn’t until I’d got home that I got the message,” Sarah added.
The situation struck an even deeper nerve because Sarah has previously opened up online about struggling with body insecurities particularly her FUPA (fatty upper pubic area).
It’s an area she’s worked hard to embrace, using her platform to promote body positivity and challenge stigma. The beautician’s comment, made so casually over text, felt deeply personal and shaming.
Sarah shared the screenshot publicly, and within hours, the story had gone viral—drawing condemnation from both customers and industry professionals.
“As a professional in this industry, that is BS,” one outraged commenter wrote.
Another added, “I’m a bigger girl and I’ve never been charged extra.”
Others noted a glaring inconsistency: if larger clients are being charged more, why don’t smaller clients receive a discount?
“If they want to charge extra, let them advertise it and see what reaction they get,” someone pointed out.
While a few defended the beautician, arguing that waxing larger areas requires more product, experienced salon workers were quick to counter that such differences are typically accounted for in fixed pricing to ensure fairness and avoid discrimination.
But for Sarah, the damage was already done. What should have been an empowering step in self-care turned into a humiliating experience.
“It took me a lot to even go through with the appointment,” she said. “And now I feel like I have to carry this shame because of one message.”
Her story has since resonated with thousands, opening a broader conversation about professionalism in beauty services and how seemingly minor comments can carry major emotional weight.
Sarah hasn’t said whether she’ll return to the same salon, but the internet has made its stance clear: beauty shouldn’t come with body shaming.
