The expected weekend sports competition turned into a major topic of discussion that made people argue both within and beyond fencing.
University of Maryland hosted the Cherry Blossom Open which attracted women foil fencers from nationwide Division 1A programs.
The Fencing Academy of Philadelphia represented Stephan Turner at the event whose brave fencing style matched her unwavering concentration and integrity towards the sport.

Players competed not for the win but to stand up against polcy changes by demonstrating their beliefs.
Turner moved ahead through the opening rounds by beating four opponents before advancing further in the competition.
The next important instant changed everything in the match.
She faced off against Redmond Sullivan from Iconic Fencing Club who was a transgender athlete.

At this match Turner made a decision which stopped her tournament participation and created major sports news.
She entered the sword combat area in her customary manner with her equipment and concentration intact.
Standing before the referee and audience she kneeled down to take off her mask.
“I saw that I was going to be in a pool with Redmond, and from there I said, ‘OK, let’s do it. Turner explained to Fox News Digital that he planned to kneel before his meeting.

The stadium fell silent. Sullivan moved forward to check if Turner needed assistance as he did not know her plan.
“I looked at the ref and said: ‘I’m sorry, I cannot do this. This space belongs to female competition only since I am a woman meeting a man here. As Turner put it she responded with ‘I cannot participate with this person’.
She added, “I have much love and respect for you,” directing her words to Sullivan. “But I will not fence you.”

In accordance with the rules established by FIE the referee presented Turner with a black card that made her unable to participate anymore.
Before joining the women’s division at Wagner College for the 2024 season Sullivan claimed 24th position at a 39-person tournament.
USA Fencing quickly released a statement, clarifying that Turner’s disqualification “was not related to any personal statement but was merely the direct result of her decision to decline to fence an eligible opponent.”

The organization referred to its 2023 transgender policy that ensures respectful inclusion during athletic competition.
“USA Fencing will always err on the side of inclusion,” the statement read, “and we’re committed to amending the policy as more relevant evidence-based research emerges.”
The event created strong disapproval from both internet users and sport professionals right away.
People now doubt if sports maintain its authentic purpose according to Martina Navratilova. My temper flares at USAFencing’s poor actions. You should not put female athletes in an unfair competition situation according to your gender double standards.
Some people think that biological differences between trans athletes and non-trans women destroy sports equality.
Sullivan remains silent about this particular incident.
People who support conservative sports values and women’s rights groups have opposed her participation in the women’s division after she switched teams from men to women.
The public argument about transgender athletes in sports takes place while broader tensions in the USA about this topic persist.
During December 2024 the Biden administration halted the planned Title IX expansion which would have safeguarded transgender athletes at college level thus giving sports organizations authority to make decisions about transgender participation.

Turner’s demonstration of dissent has started substantial athletic and philosophical talks throughout professional sports venues.
Sports-related fairness discussions grow more difficult to handle today.
Competitive fencing remains uncertain because different groups debate the path the sport must take ahead.
