Kris Kremers, 21, and Lisanne Froon, 22, embarked on a journey filled with excitement and a thirst for exploration when they headed to Panama in March 2014. They had planned a six-week stay in Panama, with the intention of dividing their time between exploring the sights and offering their help to local communities. Teaching children, learning Spanish, and exploring the country’s landscapes were all on their agenda.
Unfortunately, their once-in-a-lifetime adventure took a devastating and perplexing turn when a seemingly innocent hike resulted in their vanishing. What started as a regular expedition through Panama’s trails turned into a perplexing case that left investigators baffled for years.
Both girls had been staying with a local host family in Boquete, a town near the renowned Baru volcano. On April 1, 2014, they decided to go on a hike through the thick forest that surrounded the volcano.
They had intended to come back within a few hours, with the company of the host family’s dog. The two friends left their temporary residence at approximately 11 a.m., casually expressing their desire to discover the nearby village on social media.
Unfortunately, the afternoon hike through Panama’s El Pianista trail would be the final sighting of Kremers and Froon. When the dog returned home alone later that evening, the host family became worried.
As evening fell, their concern grew, but the search didn’t commence until the next day. The girls had failed to meet up with a local tour guide, causing concern.
As time progressed, the families of the girls, accompanied by Dutch detectives from the Netherlands, arrived to aid in the search. After an exhaustive 10-day search, the thick forest provided no leads.
Weeks went by without any news of the missing women, and optimism started to dwindle. The situation grew increasingly dire as search teams depleted their resources.
Then, almost 10 weeks later, a significant development occurred when a woman from the area discovered a blue backpack near the Culebra River. Within the bag, there were personal belongings that clearly belonged to the girls.
The collection included sunglasses, $83 in cash, Froon’s passport, two bras, a water bottle, and, most importantly, their phones and a camera. This recent development sparked renewed curiosity in the case, yet rather than offering any solutions, it only further intensified the enigma.
Forensic investigators meticulously examined the digital devices, hoping to uncover valuable information regarding the duo’s mysterious disappearance. What they discovered were disturbing details that indicated a horrifying last few days for the women.
It seemed as though the women had made frantic attempts to seek assistance, dialing both the international emergency number 112 and Panama’s 911. They attempted to reach emergency services a total of 77 times.
One of these calls briefly connected for a mere two seconds before abruptly ending. The remaining calls were unsuccessful, most likely because of the weak signal reception in the dense jungle.
Froon’s Samsung Galaxy S III phone stopped working on April 4, while Kremers’ iPhone 4 continued to function until April 11. Unfortunately, there were unsuccessful efforts to enter the correct PIN code during that period.
This period may have seen one or both women alive, according to investigators. The details are still uncertain, but it seems that there was a desperate fight for survival.
The camera, a Canon Powershot SX270, revealed the most unsettling evidence. The images captured by the camera would ignite a multitude of speculations regarding the events that transpired.
Images captured during the initial stages of the hike displayed the companions with joyful expressions and striking poses along a trail adjacent to the Continental Divide. However, following April 1, a collection of unsettling images materialized on the camera.
These photos, captured in the early hours of April 8, depict a haunting scene. The flash photography illuminated a scene of scattered belongings, including plastic bags, candy wrappers, dirt, a mirror, and rocks.
A chilling image revealed the back of Kremers’ head, hinting at a possible presence of blood near her temple. Speculation arose that the girls may have encountered a significant incident in the dense jungle.
Speculation began to arise regarding the possible events that unfolded with the two companions. Speculations swirled around the girls’ disappearance, a potential injury for Kremers, and an unsuccessful attempt by Froon to rescue her.
Some individuals raised concerns about the unusual arrangement of their possessions and speculated about the possibility of suspicious activity. However, there were no indications of imminent violence, and the evidence gathered did not offer definitive answers.
In June, additional distressing findings came to light. Investigators discovered Kremers’ denim shorts thoughtfully positioned on a rock by the riverbank.
A disturbing discovery soon followed: small pieces of bone, a foot still in a boot, and a portion of a pelvic bone. Forensic testing has confirmed the identity of the remains as Kremers and Froon.
These remains only deepen the enigma. Froon’s bones displayed signs of natural decomposition, while Kremers’ bones had a strikingly white appearance, as if they had undergone a bleaching process.
After extensive investigations, the authorities have been unable to determine the exact cause of death for the two friends. Speculations vary from suspicious circumstances to a devastating incident in the remote wilderness.
Dutch authors Marja West and Jürgen Snoeren viewed the deaths as a tragic accident. Their book, “Lost in the Jungle,” suggests that a sudden flood or another unforeseen natural event may have affected the friends.
The authors suggest that the challenging environment of the jungle gradually took a toll on their physical well-being. However, the unusual photographs and the unsuccessful pleas for assistance give rise to unsettling interpretations.
