A small community in northeast British Columbia is mourning after one of the de*dliest school shootings in Canadian history left ten people de*d and at least 25 injured.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said they received reports of an active shooter at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School shortly after 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Officers quickly responded to the scene and entered the building to locate the threat.
In a statement, the RCMP said, “As part of the initial response to the active shooting, police entered the school to locate the thre*t. During the search, officers located multiple victims.”
Six people were found de*d inside the school. One additional victim later di*d while being transported to hospital. Police also discovered two more victims deceased inside a residence in the community believed to be connected to the incident.
Authorities confirmed the suspected shooter was among those found de*d inside the school. Police said the individual had sustained a self inflicted injury. The identities of the victims and the suspect have not yet been released.
In addition to the fatalities, two people were airlifted to hospital with serious or life threatening injuries. Up to 25 others were assessed and treated at a local medical centre for non life threatening injuries.
British Columbia Premier David Eby expressed his condolences following the tragedy. “Our hearts are in Tumbler Ridge tonight with the families of those who have lost loved ones,” he said, adding that the government would ensure support for the community in the days ahead.
Prime Minister Mark Carney also responded, calling the attack devastating. “I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones,” he said.
He also thanked first responders for their bravery, saying Canadians were united in grief and gratitude.
According to international reports, the attack is now considered the second de*dliest school sho*ting in Canada’s history and the worst in nearly four decades.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the attack as the town of Tumbler Ridge faces the difficult process of mourning and recovery after a tr*gedy that has shaken the nation.
