Horror unfolded when the artist allowed the audience do anything they wanted to her for six hours

Marina Abramović, a Serbian performance artist recognized for pushing the frontiers of art and endurance, performed one of the most painful performances in performance art history in 1974.

In a captivating performance titled “Rhythm 0,” Abramović mesmerized the audience as she remained motionless for six hours in a gallery in Naples. During this time, she fearlessly invited the public to freely interact with her body, without any kind of interference or opposition.

The performance would soon take a turn for the worse, becoming more horrifying than she could have ever anticipated. It would leave her teetering on the edge of death, revealing the sinister aspects of human behavior. Abramović’s vision for “Rhythm 0” was both straightforward and daring.

She organized a collection of 72 objects, including both harmless items like flowers and feathers as well as more hazardous ones like a knife, a razor, and a loaded gun. She informed the visitors that they could interact with these objects in any way they wished, but she would remain still and unresponsive.

“I am an object. “You can do whatever you want with me, and I will take full responsibility for the 6 hours,” she stated, as reported by the Marina Abramović Institute. At the start of the show, onlookers approached her with caution.

Some people offered her roses, while others observed from afar, seemingly uncertain about how to interact with the unique situation. However, as time went on, the atmosphere in the room changed drastically.

Abramović later remembered the shift that took place among the audience as they gradually let go of their inhibitions. “At the beginning, nothing really happened,” she said in an interview.

“The public were really nice. She explained, “They gave me a rose; they would kiss me and look at me, and the public became more and more wild.”

What began as a peaceful experiment quickly took a turn for the worse as the public became more daring. One individual sandwiched a knife between her knees, while another used a razor to sever her clothing.

Intense images from that period showed Abramović with tears in her eyes, but she maintained her composure, unwavering in her dedication to her artistic vision. Despite her tears, the audience remained unaffected and continued to push things further.

A man went as far as cutting her neck and drinking her blood, displaying the increasing brutality of the crowd. Abramović remained silent throughout, yet the atmosphere in the room was filled with an undeniable tension.

Several spectators stepped in, gently wiping away her tears and trying to protect her from the escalating aggression of the crowd. However, some individuals persisted in intensifying their actions, testing the limits in this seemingly unrestricted environment.

The performance reached its most intense moment when a man picked up the loaded gun and pressed it firmly against her temple. Abramović sensed the purpose behind his actions, and the feeling of peril was overpowering.

“I was ready to die,” she later confessed in an interview with “The Guardian.” She detected a palpable shift in the room’s atmosphere, with some audience members encouraging him and others scrambling to intervene.

It is still uncertain whether the gun was discharged or if the six-hour time limit had simply expired, but this incident had a profound impact on Abramović, both physically and emotionally. Abramović looked back on the experience with a blend of surprise and gratitude, recognizing the deep lesson it had imparted to her.

“I felt really violated: they cut up my clothes, stuck rose thorns in my stomach, one person aimed the gun at my head, and another took it away,” she said. The general population possesses the power to inflict harm.

If you give them total freedom, they will become frenzied enough to kill you,” she added. After the long six hours had passed, Abramović finally broke her stillness and made a movement.

As she started to move, transforming from an object into a person, the audience dispersed. “I start moving.

I started being myself …, and at that moment, everyone ran away. People could not actually confront me as a person,” she recalled.

What started as a bold display of artistic expression transformed into a thought-provoking exploration of human conduct in the absence of repercussions. Abramović not only made it through the experience but came out with a heightened awareness of the inhumanity that can arise when one person has complete power over another.

She carried the physical and emotional wounds from that day, serving as a constant reminder of her ordeal and an unsettling example of the less admirable aspects of human behavior. As she later revealed, “After the performance, I have one streak of white hair on my head.

I cannot get rid of the feeling of fear for a long time,” she admitted. Ultimately, Abramović’s “Rhythm 0” serves as a chilling testament to the depths of human conduct.

Despite surviving the performance, the terrifying incident that nearly claimed her life exposed the dangerous consequences of granting individuals unrestricted authority over others. In spite of everything, Abramović fearlessly persisted in pushing the limits of performance art, with “Rhythm 0” standing out as one of her most defining and chilling works.
