In the bustling streets of Bangkok, a young influencer known as Thanakarn “Bank Leicester” Kanthee captivated hearts with his creativity and resilience.
From selling garlands to rapping his way into people’s lives, Bankโs innovative approach brought him fame and admiration on social media.
Bank, just 21 years old, was not only a social media sensation but also a dedicated grandson. His life revolved around supporting his grandmother, who had raised him after his parents separated when he was only two months old.
By the age of seven, Bank was navigating Bangkokโs vibrant markets, selling garlands to support his family. His determination shone when he incorporated rap into his sales pitch, a move that endeared him to many.
Despite his talent, financial challenges pushed Bank toward risky stunts to earn money. Social media challenges, often involving dangerous drinking dares, became a way for him to provide for his family.
Tragically, during a recent event in Chanthaburi province, Bank accepted a challenge that proved fatal. The challenge involved consuming two 350ml bottles of whiskey in exchange for 30,000 baht (approximately $875).
Witnesses reported that Bank began feeling unwell soon after completing the dare. He vomited and lost consciousness before being rushed to Songpeenong Hospital for emergency care.
Despite medical intervention, Bank was pronounced dead in the early hours of December 26. His death left friends, family, and fans reeling in shock and grief.
Authorities initially recorded his cause of death as acute heart failure. However, an autopsy is pending to determine if the excessive alcohol consumption directly contributed to the tragedy.
Following Bankโs death, police arrested two individuals, Ekachart โEmโ Meephrom and Theerawat Srirot, in connection with the incident. If found guilty of negligence causing death, they could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 20,000 baht ($580).
Bank’s rise to social media fame was rooted in his unique talent and determination. Videos of him rapping while selling garlands showcased his ability to turn challenges into opportunities.
He often shared glimpses of his struggles and motivations on social media, including posts about his love for his family. โI am willing to be bullied and insulted to just get scraps of moneyโฆ to provide for my family,โ he wrote in one heartfelt post.
Days before his passing, Bank shared another poignant post, reflecting on his priorities. โMy duty is to earn money and find happiness for myself, thatโs enough,โ he stated, showing his unwavering commitment to his loved ones.
The dangers of social media challenges have since become a point of national conversation in Thailand. Dr. Pakpoom Dechhasdin, a renowned Thai medical professional, warned of the life-threatening risks associated with rapid alcohol consumption, including respiratory arrest and acute alcohol poisoning.
Tributes have flooded social media, with fans and friends remembering Bank as a kind and dedicated individual. Many expressed sorrow over the lengths he went to provide for his family.
Bank’s story serves as a cautionary tale about the negative aspects of social media. While these platforms offer fame and financial opportunities, they can also pressure individuals into taking life-threatening risks.
As the investigation continues, there is a growing call for stricter regulations against dangerous online challenges.
Social media activist Guntouch Pongpaiboonwet has offered support to Bankโs family, emphasizing the importance of responsibility in content creation.
Bank Leicesterโs untimely death has left a profound impact on his community and beyond.
