The connection between the two was evident to all observers. Jimmy Kimmel, the host, made sure to highlight it.
“Do you see what an impression you’re making on the young man?” Kimmel inquired of Combs, who was then 41 years old. “I hope you’re going to be a good role model to him… what’s going on with you guys?”
Combs said cryptically but innocently, “I think we’ve become friends in a strange way.” At the time, the exchange appeared to be harmless.
