Nicole Kidman, recognized for her daring approach to hard roles, is pushing the envelope once more with her latest film, “Babygirl”.
The 57-year-old actress, known for her work in films such as “Eyes Wide Shut” and “Moulin Rouge”, has taken on a bold new part that explores issues of power, sexuality, and professional relationships.
In this sizzling romantic thriller, Kidman plays Romy, a high-powered CEO imprisoned in a loveless marriage who has a passionate affair with a much younger intern, played by “Where the Crawdads Sing” star Harris Dickinson.
“Babygirl”, which is to be released in UK cinemas in January 2025, promises explosive on-screen chemistry between Kidman, Dickinson, and Antonio Banderas, who plays Romy’s husband.
The film delves into the intricate power dynamics of relationships, with Kidman’s character dealing with emotional and sexual tension throughout.
While “Babygirl” covers tough issues, Kidman faced challenges beyond the plot. During the filming of the movie’s intimate sequences, Kidman encountered an unanticipated personal challenge.
In a candid interview, she confessed that the sexually charged nature of her scenes might often be overwhelming.
“There were times when we were shooting where I was like, ‘I don’t want to orgasm any more,'” said Kidman.
The intensity of the scenes left her exhausted, with the actress laughing, “I don’t care if I am never touched again in my life!” She also expressed frustration while filming, adding, “It’s like, ‘Don’t touch me.'”
Despite the difficulties, Kidman acknowledged the trust and caring between herself and her co-stars. She emphasized the collaborative environment on set, where she worked alongside Dickinson, Banderas, and director Halina Reijn.
Kidman praised Reijn’s approach, recognizing the importance of having a female director for such a sensitive movie. “I knew Halina wasn’t going to exploit me,” Kidman said. “It’s the story I wanted to be part of, that I wanted to tell.”
The three also collaborated with intimacy coordinators to make sure everyone was safe and comfortable during the more explicit times.
Dickinson mirrored Kidman’s comments, applauding the effort put into the sequences, saying, “We were all very, very gentle with each other and helped each other.”
Though Kidman has played sexual parts before, she admits that “Babygirl” pushed her to new heights. The actress explained that she embarked on the job to discover new facets of herself as an actor.
“I’ve always been on a quest as an actor, I’m always going, ‘Where have I not been? And what can I explore as a human being?’” she said.
Regarding her reaction to the script, Kidman admitted that it had a significant influence on her. She characterized it as “so funny” but “hypnotic” and acknowledged being “turned on” by the stuff.
With “Babygirl” scheduled to be released soon, fans will be anxious to watch how Kidman handles this new chapter in her famous career.
