Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei murdered after being set on fire by an ex-boyfriend

Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan distance runner who recently competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics, found herself at the heart of a devastating incident that has sent shockwaves through the athletic community. Just weeks after finishing 44th in the women’s marathon at the Paris Games on August 11, Cheptegei tragically fell victim to a horrifying attack that sadly ended her life.

The star athlete’s narrative, previously filled with triumph and resilience, has now encountered a heartbreaking twist. An indescribable tragedy leaves her family, friends, and fans devastated.

Cheptegei’s athletic accomplishments were truly extraordinary. In 2022, she achieved an impressive feat by completing the Abu Dhabi Marathon in a remarkable time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 47 seconds, setting a national record for Uganda.

She has successfully earned a place at the Paris Olympics. Throughout her impressive career of more than 15 years, she proudly represented Uganda in a wide range of prestigious championships, including track, cross-country, road, and mountain races.

One of her most remarkable achievements was winning the 2022 Up and Downhill race at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Thailand. Cheptegei proved to be a formidable presence, both in his athletic pursuits and in his personal life.

Nevertheless, the events that transpired on September 2 in Endebess, Kenya, had a profound impact on Cheptegei’s life. As per the account of Trans Nzoia County police chief Jeremiah Ole Kosiom, witnesses reported a tense argument between Cheptegei and her alleged boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema.

Ndiema, who allegedly had a five-liter can of gasoline, entered Cheptegei’s residence while she was away at church. Upon her return, their disagreement intensified, and Ndiema reportedly used a flammable substance to harm her, resulting in severe burns.

Cheptegei suffered extensive burns covering approximately 80 percent of her body, in addition to severe inhalation injuries. The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret quickly took her, admitting her to the intensive care unit (ICU).

From the very beginning, her condition was extremely serious. According to Dr. Owen Menach, the Director of Clinical Services at the hospital, her organs started to deteriorate while doctors made every effort to save her.

Unfortunately, despite all efforts, Cheptegei tragically passed away on September 5. Only three weeks after her Olympic journey, she sadly lost her life.

Dr. Menach stated, “It is sad that we lost the patient early this morning after all her organs failed at about 5 a.m.” The incident also injured Ndiema, causing burns on 30 percent of his body.

He is currently receiving medical care at the same hospital. We anticipate charging Ndiema with murder once he fully recovers.

The authorities are currently conducting an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack. Reports suggest that the couple was involved in a property dispute.

Cheptegei’s father, Joseph Cheptegei, revealed that Ndiema had been causing distress to his daughter for weeks before the incident. He had previously shared his concerns with the police, but he felt they did not give the matter the attention it deserved.

One of Cheptegei’s daughters was present during the shocking incident. According to “The Standard,”ย  the young girl said, โ€œHe kicked me while I tried to run to the rescue of my mother.โ€

Despite her best efforts to seek assistance and a neighbor’s intervention to extinguish the fire, the damage was already significant. The devastating loss of Cheptegei has sent shockwaves through the sports community, leaving everyone in a state of deep sorrow.

The Ugandan Athletics Federation conveyed their condolences, expressing their deep sadness over the loss of their athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, who tragically became a victim of domestic violence. The federation added, โ€œMay her soul rest in peace.”

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe also expressed his disapproval of the attack. He called it “the most tragic and unthinkable circumstances” and emphasized the need to protect female athletes from abuse.

Violence against female athletes in Kenya and other African nations is unfortunately a recurring issue, and Cheptegei’s case is just one example of this troubling pattern. Agnes Tirop, a renowned Kenyan runner, tragically succumbed to a fatal stabbing in October 2021.

As her estranged husband faces legal proceedings, her murder trial continues. Damaris Mutua, a talented athlete originally from Kenya, tragically lost her life in her own home in April 2022. The authorities are still actively searching for her boyfriend, who is considered a person of interest in the case.

These incidents, coupled with the unfortunate passing of Cheptegei, have sparked renewed demands for structural reforms to safeguard women against gender-based violence. Kenya has been experiencing a worrying increase in femicide cases.

Tragically, more than 500 women lost their lives from 2016 to 2023. Women’s rights activists are deeply angered by the ongoing violence, demanding increased accountability and more robust protections.

Njeri wa Migwi, the executive director of the Kenyan nonprofit Usikimye, expressed concern over the attack on Cheptegei, highlighting the troubling trend of violence against women. Migwi emphasized the pressing need for prompt and fair resolution.
