Liam Payne, 31, had traveled to Buenos Aires to support his former bandmate Niall Horan, who held a concert there.
However, their planned reunion turned into tragedy when Payne was involved in an incident that immediately drew the attention of local emergency services and international media.
According to accounts, the event took place at the famous CasaSur Hotel.
Eyewitnesses describe a moment of disbelief as they witnessed the development of the scene from below.
At 5:04 p.m. local time, a concerned call was received stating that a guy was lying motionless in the hotel’s internal courtyard. Emergency personnel were summoned to the location immediately.
Alberto Crescenti, the chief of Argentina’s state emergency medical system, reported that paramedics came in minutes.
Crescenti said, “The alarm was raised at 5:04 p.m. local time saying a person was lying in an internal patio at Casa Sur. At 5:11 p.m. an ambulance arrived, and the man was certified dead.”
What began as a regular answer quickly took on worldwide significance, as Crescenti revealed: “Afterwards, we found out he had been a famous singer. Unfortunately, the injuries he had suffered as a result of the fall proved to be fatal. There was no possibility of resuscitating him.”
More information became available, bringing the seriousness of the situation into light.
Payne reportedly fell from the hotel’s third floor, about 40 meters, sustaining serious injuries.
